“Visiting The Memories Of Our Past”

Project Mandate
Let us never have it been said we have forgotten who we are and where we came from. The Town of Bird Cove and the communities of Brig Bay, Plum Point, Blue Cove and Pond Cove all have a unique and interesting past. Through the Community Memories Project we are visiting family and friends who have their own stories to tell through pictures and text. The stories of our ancestors are being told once again through the generations that have followed. The images being archived reflect the hard work and dedication of the residents of this region who have survived the hardships of time and in doing so have shaped their lives and personalities.

The road in this picture was the road going from Brig Bay to Plum Point. The highway on the Northern Peninsula did not open until 1962. You can drive from Corner Brook to Brig Bay today in about 4 hours. In 1950 it took 2 days sometimes to get to Corner Brook by coastal boat. It depended on how many stops the coastal boat had along the way. During the winter dog sleds and horses were used for transportation. A lot of people walked between communities.

A lot of time was spent working. The photo of Simon bringing a dipper of water from the hand barrel, was just one of the many chores. All the modern conveniences of today have changed the daily routine from years ago. In the past all chores were labor intensive. Everyone in the family had responsibilities and days were long. All members of the family knew their place and the work ethic was different then today.

If you have a photo and story to add to our project, please Contact Us, and we will gladly add it to our collection.
